Jeanne Kosfeld attended one of Richard’s architecture walking tours of the Irvine Park Neighborhood in St. Paul. Later, Jeanne asked Richard to co-author a coloring book based on her 18 drawings of the beautifully restored homes in the Irvine Park area. The book was published in 2021 by the Ramsey County Historical Society Press.

With Rick Harrison and Greg Yoko, Richard co-authored Prefurbia: Transforming Suburbia From Disdainable to Sustainable, a book that presents Rick’s innovative planning concepts  (www.rhsdplanning.com). Richard also worked with Rick to produce a comprehensive book proposal, which was sent to more than a dozen literary agents and several publishers. Three agents responded with offers to represent the book. The book was published in 2008 by Sustainable Land Development International.

Richard edited two book-length essays: “Architecture in Minnesota at the Turn of the Century,” by Alan K. Lathrop and “Purcell & Elmslie, Architects,” by Mark Hammons. The University of Delaware Press published the essays in 1994 in "Life on the Upper Mississippi, 1890-1915: Minnesota 1900," in conjunction with an exhibition of the same name at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts. Michael Conforti, general editor of the book and curator of the exhibition, said, “[Richard] was tireless in his effort to direct the essays and he succeeded in every way, making them both readable as well as cogent. Each one is now a serious contribution to the field.”
